If you’re interested in developing your skills and becoming more involved in the world of business, you may be wondering what strategic management careers are. The fields of strategic management include planning, drafting short and long-term business strategies, implementation, and directing and controlling. Today’s companies are aggressively hiring for people with professional and technical know-how in all of these areas. But how do you become a strategic manager?

The field of strategic management is critical to the future of any company. As such, graduates often won’t immediately move into a managerial position. They’ll begin by working in a specific department, executing the plans of the company’s top executives. Eventually, they’ll be given their own projects, proving their capabilities. As a strategic manager, you may be entrenched at one company for a number of years before advancing to executive level.

A career in strategic management requires analytical skills, including the ability to evaluate competitive environments and evaluate key strengths and weaknesses of a company. Strategic managers also need to evaluate the company’s market status and recommend the most effective actions to take to dominate it. The primary objective of a business entity is value creation. Strategic managers are responsible for creating this value, while ensuring the strategies earn profit and encourage economic development. Therefore, strategic managers must be able to develop strategies that help organizations fit into a changing economy and increase efficiency.

Strategic planners study the market, industry trends, and competitors, and develop business strategies for individual companies. They are responsible for anticipating changes in the market before they happen and developing strategies to meet these changes. Strategic planners’ key skills include analytical abilities, creativity, problem-solving, and leadership qualities. These skills are valuable in day-to-day work assignments, as they will help them shape the future of organizations they care about.
