Malta is a small country in the Mediterranean south of Italy. It offers a highly-regarded strategic location for investors. The country offers a great lifestyle, with the national languages being Maltese and English, making communication easy.

Malta is a modern, developed country with an advanced economy which benefits from its membership in the European Union.

Although a Malta passport isn’t directly available, you can obtain Malta citizenship through naturalisation by donating and investing in real estate. The naturalisation process must also include a philanthropic contribution to a Malta organisation approved by the Community Malta Agency.

The benefits of Malta citizenship are many and include:

    • Access to the Schengen countries
    • Favourable, tax-efficient environment
    • High quality of life
    • Quality healthcare and education systems

We’ll outline the steps to a Malta passport and citizenship.

    Steps to a Malta Passport

The steps to Malta citizenship begin the application process for a Malta Golden Visa. The basic citizenship requirements include:

    • An applicant must be 18 years of age
    • Residency requirements: You must reside in Malta for 26 months and donate €600,000. If you reside for 12 months, the donation will be €750,000.
    • Due Diligence: The applicant must pass a four-tier rigid due diligence process that ensures good character and a flawless reputation. Applicants must not have previously been denied entry to Malta.
    • Investment Requirements:
    • Contribution: The applicant must contribute a minimum of €600,000 for a 36-month residency or a €750,000 contribution for a 12-month residency.
    • The resident must buy real estate worth at least €700,000 and retain the property for at least 5 years. You can also rent a property for a minimum annual cost of €16,000 per month for a period of 36 months. The property cannot be sublet during the rental period.
    • A € 10,000 donation must be made to a registered cultural, scientific, sports, animal welfare, or philanthropic non-governmental organisation approved by the Community Malta Agency.

It takes approximately 2 to 3 months to process the residency application, and the residency card given when approved provides visa-free access to all Schengen countries. Once you’ve completed a further 36 months of residency and fulfilled the other requirements, a citizenship application can be submitted, and when approved, you’ll be issued a Malta passport. The Community Malta Agency also monitors new citizens for a period of 5 years.
