Can You Put a Different Tire Size on the Same Rim?

If you want to install a different tire size on your vehicle, the first step is to determine what the exact size of the tire is. A tire’s outer diameter is measured in millimeters, and its width is measured in inches. The tire’s width should match the width of the rim’s inner bead. When putting a different tire size on your vehicle, you should be careful not to mix the sizes, as this will create a rim-to-tire fitment problem.

The rim size is important because it influences the spacing of the wheel to the wheel well. It also determines the tire’s alignment with the wheel well. To measure the offset, simply measure the distance from the bead seat to the center-line of the wheel. If you don’t know what this measurement is, you can use a special tool from Les Schwab or any auto parts store.

The tire width also matters. Different rim widths have different contact patches. For example, a 235mm tyre on a 7.5″ wheel will be slightly wider than a 235mm tire on a 9″ rim. As a result, it will be difficult to install the same tire size on a wider rim. However, it’s possible to install the same tire size on a smaller rim.

In general, tire width refers to the distance between the inner and outer sidewall. In most cases, this width is expressed in millimeters. Amounts are expressed in percentages, while the height of the sidewall from the rim to the tread is expressed in inches. The width of the inner bead connects the tire to the wheel. Your car’s tire size should be listed in the driver’s side door or glove box.
